ZMAJ, The Breath Beneath The Mountain
Dans la mythologie serbe, le Zmaj est un dragon protecteur. Créature d'une grande sagesse, il peut changer de forme et se faire si petit qu'il se cache dans le tronc des vieux arbres creux. Une légende raconte que ce dragon paisible veillait sur les forêts, les rivières et un trésor enfoui dans la montagne. Il en confia les clés aux hommes, en échange du respect du lieu. Mais la cupidité dévora leur cœur, et le pacte fut rompu.
Dans les forêts de Serbie de l'Est, autour du Timok, veillent les Rusalje, des fées qui donnent la maladie autant que la guérison. Les sorcières valaques savent communiquer avec elles et intercéder pour le secours des hommes.
Et parmi les arbres se tient Muma Pădurii, la Mère de la Forêt, vieille femme logée dans un tronc, protectrice des bêtes et des plantes, redoutable à qui vient troubler son domaine.

In Serbian mythology, the Zmaj is a protective dragon. A creature of great wisdom, it can change its shape and make itself so small that it hides in the trunks of old hollow trees. Legend has it that this peaceful dragon watched over the forests, the rivers, and a treasure buried within the mountain. He entrusted its keys to men, in exchange for their respect for the place. But greed devoured their hearts, and the pact was broken.
In the forests of Eastern Serbia, around the Timok, dwell the Rusalje, fairies who bestow sickness as much as healing. The Vlach witches know how to speak with them and to intercede for the aid of men.
And among the trees stands Muma Pădurii, the Mother of the Forest — an old woman lodged within a trunk, protector of beasts and plants, fearsome to any who come to disturb her domain.
